So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:17

Side by side, just below the eyes, your ears stick out of your head. They provide our sense of hearing. And the Creator tilted them forward to facilitate a combined hearing range of almost a full 360˚. Each person’s hearing range depends mainly on the condition of the ears and the nervous system. Our ears often collaborate with our eyes as we go about daily routines (Imagine walking down a busy street blindfolded and alone). People with hearing problems such as tinnitus, which manifests by a whistling sound, will find it difficult to fit into specific occupations, e.g. firefighter, disc jockey, etc.

Clearly, our hearing is another critical way God can reach us. He gives His word of doctrine, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness, guidance, prophecy, and blessing (2Timothy 3:16). Our text Rom 10:17 reads, ‘So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. The point is that our faith is built up as we hear God’s word. Good listeners become good teachers, parents, spouses, counsellors, children and great leaders. There is even a name for such a leader – democratic.

Information flows from the ear to the mind and the heart for rumination. Later, this information shows up in our actions, behaviour and character. God fulfils His promise through the ear in Hebrews 10: 16, 7, and that word springs up to eternal life and Christian living. Just as the driver’s attention is riveted on the road, God must have our 100% attention, or we are not worshipping Him. Some people even look at you as if they are listening, but they have tuned you out mentally, so they’ll still not hear. Others listen only to hear your first words and begin to formulate their answer. Either way, we cannot hear what is being said. For some people, social media has given them spiritual tinnitus – they WhatsApp while the sermon is going on! They are there present and in person. However, they can hardly hear what is said because they are not there in mind and heart.

So turn up your audio, my dear. Be attentive. Listen up to God. Through the Holy Spirit and His timeless word, He has something to say to you – about sin, righteousness, and judgment. About your lifestyle, relationships, influence on others, choices, music, soap operas and movies you watch; about how only wickedness, vengeance, and smartness make you laugh while truth and righteousness make you yawn…

Afterwards, listen around so you can glorify God through your decisions and actions.

2 Chronicles 1:10

Mrs Doubtfire[1] is a comedy which stars Robin Williams and Sally Field. It is about a couple going through a divorce suit filed by the wife, Sally Field. In the movie, the husband losses his job and comes home to throw a wild birthday party for one of their children. When the wife got home, there were children everywhere. Some jumped on the sofa, while others jumped on other things. Her husband and 2 children danced on top of the dining table. A horse that came inside the house ate the giant birthday cake. She could no longer take her husband’s seeming irresponsible behaviour any longer. She filed for divorce.

Have you ever had your mummy come home, and you had not done what she asked you to do? Sometimes, you have even messed up something. Most parents or even a spouse will freak out. You likely got some lovely lashes from the cane that should make you cry.

God actually watches things a lot. If we go to the first chapter of Genesis, we find God “saw” mentioned 7 times. The word ‘Saw’ is mentioned 548 times in KJV, and a lot of it is related to what God did. What about ‘see’? 597 times. In Genesis chapter 1, God sees that everything He did was good. However, immediately we get to chapter 3, Eve looks at the fruit that would end her joyful life, and she sees it as good in 3 ways!

© Nick Loggie (https://unsplash.com)

In each of the stories above, both God and Eve had done some thinking after seeing what they saw. Interestingly, the word rendered “saw” in these texts is “râ’âh”, which means, among other things, to perceive, to regard, to consider, to look intently at. All of these give the impression of looking and thinking about what you are looking at. So God looked at and thought of what He saw as GOOD. 7 times. He considered all His created beauties, bits of intelligence, and performances and considered them very good (Genesis1:31). Likewise, Eve looked at the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil carefully, intently, and finally concluded that it was good (Genesis3:6). The Creator’s conclusion is proper, and till today, that conclusion is helping people all over the globe. What about Eve, the creature’s decision? It opened a pandora’s box from which none can recover except through Jesus.

It doesn’t end there. The loving Creator looks again around the time of Noah and sees that man’s wickedness is terrible, and his thoughts are constantly evil (Gen 6:5). Around this same time, those who obeyed God’s precepts looked and saw that the ungodly girls were beautiful, so they married them (Gen 6:2). Wao! God sees evil-mindedness, and His children see marriage material in the disobedient people! God sees something needing His urgent attention and intervention, but even His servants see something entirely different. Throughout the history of our race, sometimes even leaders cannot see God’s perspective and His thinking. God sees everything. Our vision is limited.

What are you currently looking at? What are you perceiving, considering, and looking intently at? Are you sure you see correctly? Are you not just thinking only about food and wealth? Are you not just making sure only your selfish interests are met? Are you not engaging only because of the benefit? Have you considered what God thinks about it? If He were to reveal His perspective to you, would you listen and obey? Where do you stand? Furthermore, if He were to perceive, regard, consider, and look carefully at you, your family, your lifestyle, and your purpose in life, would He even conclude that it is good? Or He would begin to regret….

If God sold eyesalve to you for free, would you buy it? His perspective is available to all who are hungry and thirsty for it. Just dial any of the numbers below:

Revelation 3:18

This week we are starting a new series. On our senses. Exciting insights await. Dont miss them for anything under the sun!

How many of your senses are still sharp at your age. Is it the seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or touching? Our sight is arguably the most important sense of all. Our eyes interpret many things that are both far and near. They help us to read alphabets, numerals and graphics. In bright, eye-damaging light, the pupils automatically adjust, narrowing to take in less light. In the dim light, they expand so we can see well. Can you see and read this writing of mine? Then you’re not blind!

If our eyes are not so good, we may not be able to see things some distance from our location (short-sightedness). Sometimes, we need glasses to make up for the shortfall. A lover can see even the silhouette of the beloved in dim light. Sometimes when a person loses sight, the hearing may improve to make up for it. As a little blind boy, Steveland Morris could easily pick up very tiny sounds. Little wonder that he became Stevie Wonder, the musician.

Majorly, we can decipher the alphabets/numerals/graphics in our environment through our sight. If we are used to a particular path, it is still possible to use it in darkness because we know where all the potholes, curves and inclines may be found. Our memories, therefore, work with our sight to enable us to achieve many things.

How about your spiritual eyes? A relationship with God helps to throw the proper light on issues in our lives. He gives us spiritual eyesight.

My dear, can your eyes really see the right direction to go? Can your eyes pick out potential pitfalls with a budding friendship? Can you maintain a covenant with your eyes (Job 31:1)? Are your eyes clear enough to see a young lady or gentleman’s true colours even from how she/he dresses? …identify the clothes that will reveal modesty and glorify God (1Tim 2:9)? … see when your own dressing promotes the devil even though you parade as a child of God (Matt 15:8)? … see when your fellow is hurting and needs your intervention as a superior, not trampling them down to finish them? … see when your conduct though seemingly suitable, still has the appearance of evil (1Thess 5:22)? … are they lucid enough to see your unethical/immoral choices for what they are? … will you be able to see clearly without the guide provided by God’s word (Ps 119:105)? Can you really see? Or do you need God’s eyewash(Revelation 3:18)? So tell me, my dear, what is good eyesight? How about asking God for His eyewash or His glasses? So that as a parent, child, leader, subordinate, student, colleague, staff, whoever you are, you can see clearly to act rightly.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Ecclesiastes 9:10; Colosians 3:23-24

You would recall (from the last two weeks) that on a recent December 20th, I was to fly from Lagos to Accra with Arik Air but could not do so that night. Knowing what I knew about His watchcare, I decided to trust God again that night in the strange city of Lagos. I made some calls. More calls were made, and finally, I was told someone was on their way to pick me up.

Brother Busayo is a soft-spoken child of God. He arrived quickly, and soon we were on our way to his flat. I was taken to a carefully furnished home that he shared with his wife and a relative. I was fed, invited to bath, etc., etc., etc. The following day, I was up bright and early, very well taken care of and driven back to the airport. God’s blessings always rush to those who care for strangers and travellers (Hebrews 13:2).

At the airport, I noticed something exciting. It was teeming with people constantly in motion. In a short time, I divided them into two main groups – destination airport (DA) for airport staff and transit airport (TA) for travellers.

© Nick Fewings (https://unsplash.com)
  1. All of us woke up from our places and went to the airport. However, one group’s journey for that day ended at the airport (DA). In contrast, the other group would continue to other destinations (TA).
  2. All of us would be so busy pursuing our individual businesses at the airport. While one group’s business was to fly from the airport (TA), the other group’s business was to help the flyers (DA).
  3. We would all have to obey rules at the airport. However, one group (DA) would abide by rules that will enable them to keep working at the airport. In contrast, the other group (TA) would obey regulations that will allow them to fly to their respective destinations.
  4. We would all interact with each other. The passengers (TA) would seek the help of the individual airport staff (DA), and sometimes they would even come away with some gift in cash or kind. Some would be nice, while others would be rude, not helpful, and quarrelsome.

I could go on and on. However, space would not permit me now. Someone said, “My past is gone; my present is passing; my future is arriving.”

Each of us is on the journey of life. I understand some of us are really cruising and having a great time. I see others are just managing to go through the motions. Are you a DA or a TA? Is your life ending where you find yourself now, or is it moving to the next level? Are you on a path constantly moving towards achieving your destiny (Ecclesiastes 9:10)? Will your business end when you die? Do you have a stake in the hereafter? Which rules do you obey? God’s rules or man’s rules (Matthew 15:9)? Is your behaviour rude or courteous, helpful or blocking, welcoming or segregating? Whether you receive rudeness or help in life, can you still focus on forging placidly toward your good life goals here with a rivet on eternal life with Christ? The choice is yours. Our key texts say, be wise. And God’s word assures us that if we ask for wisdom, God would gladly meet our needs. Job 12:12, 13, 16; Psalm 111:10; and Proverb 2:6, 7. Some of us have huge opportunities to impact our generation, while others are now losing that opportunity.

Don’t forget that the rules you obey, what you busy yourself with, how you treat others, and your general attitude depends on how you answer this question… “What shall I do with Jesus!” (Matthew 27:22)

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

Matthew 25:35

Have you seen Oluwabunmi? The kind lady who went out of her to help me in my story in the last post. Have you seen her?

That night, she looked young and educated, beautiful in her Yoruba traditional attire called Buba or Bouba. She spoke calmly, reassuringly.

I mildly refused her kind hospitality to allow me to spend the night in their house in Ojordon. Then, she offered the opportunity to spend the night in their Lagos house since I wanted to go there. I actually knew someone in Lagos and thought I could reach them. But we got to Lagos so late buses to take me there had closed. At that time, past 10 o’clock at night, picking a taxi was out of the question. I refused to go to her home for the second time. But instead of reacting to my seeming rejection, Bunmi was instead, concerned about me spending part of my fees to pay for the night at Nigerland Hotels. So she tried to dissuade me, but I didn’t budge. I had forgotten. No, I chose to ignore that God protects us always. Lord have mercy on me.

Finally, she turned towards me. Her irises reached into the semidarkness around us, searching for the expression on my face.

“Charles, look. Do you realize I am also taking a risk in asking you to go home with me? I do not know you anywhere, but I am willing to take the risk of going home with you. My Father will not mind giving you a bed. I should be afraid of you as much as you are of me Charles. I won’t do anything to you.

I assured her that I wasn’t afraid but insisted on going to a hotel. We had gotten to Lagos past 22.00 hours local time. She showed me the closest hotel, Nigerland Hotel. She stayed with me until I booked a room. She came in with me to see that I was ok. Then she went home. As she trudged into the night, I prayed for her safety.

I recognized her voice as she asked for me the following morning. Quickly, I strode to the door and opened it. We exchanged pleasantries.

She accepted my invitation to join my quiet time and prayed with me. Soon enough, she had finished sewing my torn bag and we were on our way. With a very grateful heart, I took her hand and said,

“Bunmi, do you know that your Christianity is very exceptional? I can’t thank you enough. May God always bless you!

This young Church of Pentecost lady only smiled. I always think that God sent His angel in that pretty young lady to me that night. Afterwards she took me to a place where I could pick up a bus to my school.

Have you seen Bunmi lately?

Jesus has some Bunmis walking around your location. In Matthew 10:16, He asks you to be one of them.

© C N E Amoah 2022

1John verse 5 shows that God is happy with people who treat especially, strangers, with kindness. In fact He says they are being faithful. Hebrews 13:2 agrees and shows that through generosity one may even entertain angels. Moreover, Jesus singles out kindness as an important characteristic of those who will make it to heaven.

Jesus has some Bunmis walking around your location. Have you seen any of them this week? Today? No? Matthew 10:16 asks you to be one. There are many souls out there looking for a little Christian kindness to light their way. Will you be one today?

Yes! Be one today. Go out of your way and be nice to a stranger. Be the rising sun to someone who has lost hope in mankind. God’s mankind. Give someone a reason to say, thank you O God. Do it without any fanfare or social media spotlight, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly (Matthew 6:3-4). And Jesus will personally address you when He returns sometime very soon. Go on. Don’t hesitate. Do it now!

Our story continues next post.

Psalm 121:7-8 7 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. 8 The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. (NLT)

On a recent December 20th, I was to fly from Lagos to Accra with Arik Air. The reporting time was 17:45. By 17 hours, I was at the airport. However, outside the departure hall, I spotted people dressed in white shirts as airline employees, picketing agitatedly. The departure hall was choked with an unusual number of people. The Arik Air office was empty. Then somebody said,

Ah, it seems they are having problems. They haven’t flown the whole of this week. Their employees are still on strike today. Most people in the long queues you see here are their passengers.

Wow. I had to jump on my phone at once.

Eventually, I found out that I could not fly that evening because of Arik’s problems. I had to find somewhere to sleep and come back early in the morning. It meant more calls. Ilisan-Remo, from where I was coming, would be about 4 hours by taxi. How could I go there and return to the airport in time in the morning? So I had to stay in Lagos that night. But where? Which driver could I trust with my luggage and myself at that time of night?

My mind sped back to another night about twenty years earlier.

I was travelling to Nigeria by road. We had had challenges on the way, and I got to the border town after 6 pm. My luggage was spoilt. This happened because of border patrol and gendarme’s endless opening and closing and jostling on the road. I didn’t know how to get to my destination that night because most public transport would not be available. I found myself in constant prayer for protection, direction, and guidance.

Credit © GO Amoah 2017

Eventually, a young lady I met at the border town helped me get to the Nigerland Hotel in Lagos, where I lodged for the night. And this was because I had declined to spend the night at their house in the border town. I also declined Bunmi’s (I think that’s her name) offer to house me in Lagos at her father’s house. In spite of my refusal of her hospitality, early the following day, this angel was there, knocking on my door. She came with the equipment needed to help fix my bag.

This angel sewed my bag and took me to a place where I could quickly connect to my destination without extracting a kobo from me. Certainly, mobile phones did not exist back then! Since then, I often pray that God will richly bless her and reward her with eternal life. I also told God that I would like to see her one day.

So on this night, at the airport, I trusted God again. I realized that God is merciful. He can connect and orchestrate the events of our lives such that we meet the right circumstances. With the right attitude of trust and obedience, we would make it to the complete end of our destinies. Though, He is not the architect of the evil we suffer, He is willing and able to make every single one of them work towards the progress of those committed to Him (Romans 8:28). Those who are committed

The God Who Performs

INVITATION You are warmly invited to join us by liking, following, sharing and commenting.

Psalm 57:1  Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. 2 I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me. 3 He will send help from heaven to rescue me, disgracing those who hound me. My God will send forth his unfailing love and faithfulness.[1](TLT)

He had already been through a lot. As a shepherd boy, he killed bears and lions, not to talk of foxes and snakes. He challenged a giant to a duel and killed him through divine intervention as a youth. He had to kill 300 warriors to get a protocol wife, and he achieved it with his friends. This made him very popular, and the government pretended to like him. It even employed him. The God who performs saved him each time.

Then, one fateful day, the hate which had been building slowly erupted like a volcano! He was nearly murdered in cold blood by the same king who employed him. Again, God, the divine Performer, preserved his life. They even sent messengers to this young man’s home. Only his creativity saved him that night. So for years, he lived life as a creative, innovative fugitive. By now, you have guessed who this is, right? If you haven’t, keep reading. It gets more troubling. Everyone who helped him as he was fleeing became the king’s personal enemy. And the king, personally, saw to their execution! As a fugitive, he and his friends went to the neighbouring kingdom and swore allegiance to them just to stay alive. To prove they meant it, they agreed to go to war with their enemies against their own nation! Now, you know the hero. No? Don’t worry.

The king chased him into the wilderness. For years, he personally went in search of this young fugitive. While tracking him, the king had to relieve himself in a cave one day. Unknown to him, the fugitive and his men had also retreated beside that cave. Well, the king hung his clothes and squatted… close your nose. And when he was done, he and his soldier continued their search. I guess you know now, right. In the cave, David only cut the king’s robe instead of killing him there. Each time, the God who performs was there.

Credit © Phil Aiken from https://unsplash.com

You also know he refused to kill the king more than once when it was really close and easy (1Samuel 24:4-7; 1Samuel 26:8-12). His reason? Of course…1Sa 24:6 “And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master… seeing he is the anointed of the Lord”.

David instead cried out to God for deliverance from the same king he was given a chance to kill but didn’t. Simply because Saul was ‘the anointed of the Lord’. Today, God’s ‘anointed’ would not hesitate to kill God’s ‘anointed’. God’s children will not think twice before they poison another child of God because of money. God’s children would not hesitate to do whatever it takes – fair or foul – to get what we want. And often, our loved ones wickedly goad us on.

Notice that David worked hard to preserve his own life. But he left God to deal with His ‘anointed’ who wanted to kill him. Then, when the opportunity came, he rebuked the king. David’s prayer to God (in verse 4) shows his thoughts about King Saul.

God will never leave you to some shameful fate. He is the God who performs for the benefit of His children. Work hard at your grades, health, family, church, and life. He is the God that performs all miracles for you (verse 2). He doesn’t make promises like Jeremiah 29:11-13, Luke 12:7 or even Deuteronomy31:6 just to appear great. God keeps all His promises!

1 Corinthians 6:20

There is a painting that sends slivers of trouble down my chest and arms every time I see it. I stumbled upon it by accident in a press reception. Immediately, I had to find a thumbnail of it online[1]

If the picture you see below is not clear enough… there is a handsome, thickset, tattooed man kneeling before a table. Something like a bottle and glass of alcohol probably, an ashtray with the last cigarette still smoking, a silver tray with some white stuff on it, an ID, a candle, a spoon, a lighter, a gun, a cigarette lighter, and playing cards are all on the table. On the side is a white chair or shelf with a lampstand and a white skull on it.

Come to the man himself. He’s kneeling before the table. His hand seems outstretched to receive a hypodermic needle into it. His teeth are clenched around a small rope extending from his upper arm. Then I noticed another person leaning over his shoulder. It’s the other person who has grimaced with his eyes tightly shut that is actually receiving the needle.

Though the man thinks he is injecting himself, he is actually injecting the other person’s arm with the drug. With a start, I realize that this person must be Jesus! It looks very much like Him. The artist’s message should not be difficult to unravel. He seems to be saying all the pain, wounds, and sins we inflict on ourselves are also felt by He, who was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. Even the chastisement of our peace was laid on Him, and with His stripes, we are healed.

Why would a person buy or rent a gorgeous suit/dress/cloth and drag it in the mud? Jesus created us, then because of sin, had to purchase us back with His own precious life-blood. That means we’re bought at a fabulous cost. So why would we destroy ourselves with killer lifestyles? Drugs, food, exercise, rest, entertainment, drink, and religion? I don’t understand. But I should understand, right? Keep in mind that anything that negatively affects our bodies and/or minds and makes us do things God’s children should not do must be removed. Reread our text above (1Co 6:20). It cost Someone His life to get you saved. So bring glory to God in the way you use your body (CEV). Here is more – 1Co 3:16 Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him because God’s temple is holy. You are that holy temple! (GW).

Drugs that injure or alter your body and mind, like tramadol cannot be God’s will for you. Practices including tattooing (check https://biblereasons.com/tattoos/) and bleaching that defaces God’s creation-your body – cannot be God’s will for you. Good things, exercise and food included, carried to extremes are not God’s will. Watch out and be wise about what you do and ingest, where you go, who you are with and why. Be careful about the things you watch and listen to. Don’t foolishly follow others. Learn how to think. Ask if this steroid/drug taking, body piercing, complexion changing lifestyle will please God. Be wise. Human life is too short to waste.

Serpentine slivers of silent carnivorous ants

Slither all across

The slippery sheen of the tiles

In my bathroom.

Thin slivers, meandering shavings, genuflecting, gesticulating

As my transfixed eyes

Gather the details in. There they march, brandishing

Gory pieces of gore

Ill-gotten gains from my travail with roachy dastardliness

Which I left uncleaned, in situ.

Yet proudly they scurry on with unwitting abandon even if

My itchy fingers

Massage the trigger of an aerosol spray pointing towards the wall.

My senses are arrested,

My gaze is aghast. Yet, the living red twine keeps up its dance astride the wall,

And across the floor.

Gently I thumb the spray until it farts facing the floor. Right away,

My tired feet

Start up a dance to the silent tune cooked up when the living red rope morphed

Into a thousand

Pieces of perturbed ants scampering precariously for their lives.
